President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump headed to Texas Tuesday morning and some progressives on social media were quick to jump all over Melania’s choice of shoes:
And here we have Melania Trump modeling what NOT to wear to a hurricane: 5-inch stilettos.

Not an expert, but are stiletto heels the best footwear for a disaster zone? https://t.co/pkALTnKvz0

I wouldn't normally comment on Melania's shoes but I'm not sure if this is what you wear to go meet ppl who've lost all of their belongings https://t.co/TP3YYgPIwj

The Daily Beast devoted a short piece to the controversy. So did the Hollywood Reporter. And the NY Times. The Washington Post used the shoes as an extended metaphor for a lack of the common touch…or something:
Melania Trump is the kind of woman who travels to a flood-ravaged state in a pair of black snakeskin stilettos. Heels this high are not practical. But Trump is not the kind of woman who has to be practical. Heels this high are not comfortable. Comfort is not the point. Neither hers nor yours…
Trump is the kind of woman who refuses to pretend that her feet will, at any point, ever be immersed in cold, muddy, bacteria-infested Texas water. She is the kind of woman who may listen empathetically to your pain, but she knows that you know that she is not going to experience it. So why pretend?…
Heading off to Texas, she looked dressed to view a natural disaster from a distance, from on high, not up close. Her ensemble implied that people’s personal stories would be ferried to her after they had been vetted and tidied up.
Eventually, the First Lady’s communications director released a statement about shoe-mageddon.
from @FLOTUS comms dir: "It's sad that we have an active and ongoing natural disaster in Texas, and people are worried about her shoes."

Perhaps more importantly (if anything about this can be said to be important) the First Lady changed shoes on the flight to Houston:

So there it is. People freaked out because the First Lady changed her shoes on the plane.
